ECAWAR.org is the home of the Edmonton Coalition Against War and Racism.
We look forward to your participation with us in the long struggles against illegal occupations in Iraq, Palestine and elsewhere, and opposing repression and racial profiling in Canada.
We believe funding global human needs, rather than a "war on terror," is the answer to political violence.

Next ECAWAR Meeting

Next ECAWAR planning meeting is Thursday April 15 at Strathcona Public Library (second floor) 7:00 - 8:45 pm.

Upcoming Events/News

The Afghan detainee and torture issue continues to boil in Parliament, despite the reactionary Harper government's strenuous efforts to block this issue, and hide behind redactions, a retired SCC judge's review and the soft 2011 deadline for Canadian troop withdrawal from Afghanistan. A basic idea brought forward at the post-rally discussion on March 20, 2010 is to monitor the issue's progress, and then to devise a text which would read to the effect that "we have heard enough" and the time has come to demand TROOPS OUT NOW! Full-page ads could be taken out in alternative media [SEE, VUE, NOW, Fast Forward, etc.] with donor-signatories names on the ad. Possibility exists for a campaign on a national basis- using bulk rates. A positive angle here is that a classic extra-parliamentary pressure tactic like this extends the scope of the very weak demands that opposition parties are making in parliament. (Rod L. will report back on ad rates) (Tony S. will monitor and devise a draft text, pending wider approval of this project.)

It is likely that the IDF will once again be sending troops and warplanes to Cold Lake Alberta for participation in NATO summer war games. At the March 20 meeting, there was strong support for sending a car caravan to the base and taking a message to the base commander to eject the IDF because of what Israel continues to do in Palestine. (ECAWAR organized a fantastically successful car caravan from Edmonton to Calgary on March 30, 2003, bringing our message of NO WAR to the US Consulate.) There could be lots of media grab on such an action. Internet research will be brought forward at the April 15 meeting.

Other ideas were expressed, such as staging protests at reactionary Conservative MP Laurie Hawn's office.
